adopt a cat from a shelter
According to the ASPCA, 3.2 million cats are found in shelters each year, with around 860,000 being euthanized. Adopting a cat not only helps one of the many cats in need of a home, but it also makes room for another cat to be taken in by shelters and rescue groups.
Many shelter cats interact with their caretakers on a daily basis, and their rescuers come to know their personalities rather well! You can find a cat with the temperament you're looking for, especially with adult ones. You might come across a playful, active cat or a calmer kitty who prefers cuddling and a quieter setting.

Get your new companion to warm up to you
1. Allow the cat to make the first move.
2. It’s impolite to stare at the cat since they might see you as a threat. Let the cat feel in control and comfortable.
3. Do a cat version of a handshake. You can do a version of this by extending your index finger for the cat to sniff. This becomes the human version of a cat nose.
4. Always carry some treats with you. Best way to bribe a new feline.
5. When dealing with an unfamiliar cat, limit your touching to a few seconds and observe how he reacts to determine if he he asks for more.
6. Maintain a calm and soothing tone in your voice when talking to your cat. Because they are sensitive to loud noises, your tone of voice should be similar to that used to calm a nervous child.
7. Playtime is a combination of mental and physical exercise. Make sure allot time for it!
